DIMENSIONS IN SPACE AND TIME:

ONGOING PuRSUITS.

Shota Akimaya talks to Science Fiction Author and Political campaigner Hayata Hashimoto about the recent incidents that are continuing to unfold

Shota Akimaya: Welcome to Dimensions In Space And Time can you tell us why you were detained at Washington Airport under The Patriot Act, or am I over reacting?

Hayata Hashimoto: Well like any good story there is always two sides, sometimes more. I had been asked to attend a conference of Writers, Producers, Actors and more noble individuals, to speak out against the recent terrorist events that are taking place in Japan, that we know have been orchestrated by The North Korean Government!

S, A: Which they continue to deny!

H.H.: Well that's their opinion; Anyway I had arrived to read a passage from The Bible in response to the three North Korean Christians, who were executed by their Government for speaking out against recent bombings in Japan. I had found an appropriate passage from the Beatitude about the purpose of forgiveness, since everyone knows about my devotion to The Christian Faith. When I had checked in so to speak, I was asked by a polite, yet authoritarian woman, what was my purpose in coming to the States? So I explained to her, she then told me to wait whilst she called security!

S.A: And then what happened?

H.H: Two well dressed men appeared, one black, one white, they asked me to accompany them into a small room,

S.A: Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a group of supporters there, from what might be entitled various concerns!

H.H: There were people there who had lost friends and relatives in The 9/11 incident, and the July 7th bombings in London England. And there were those that had been either directly or indirectly affected by Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And of course those who had been equally affected by the terrorist events that are being orchestrated by The North Korean Government, And of course those with what I will refer to as equally empathic concerns! They were concerned how events were unfolding and I had been sent an Email asking if I was prepared to address them, I had replied saying I would be honoured! However before I could respond I was taken into this room and told that I could be accused of incitement, because The North Korean Embassy in New York had issued a letter of protest, saying my visit was an incitement of hatred against their Government and it's people! And it was implied direct action could be taken!

S.A: Are we talking attacks on The United States via what has become known as weapons of mass destruction?

H.H: I believe that was the implication! Anyway I was told that there was a possibility of certain dedicated individuals reacting most strongly, and that it would be best all round if I left by the side entrance! I was then taken into a waiting car and allowed to get out a short distance from where the conference was taking place!

S, A: Which you attended!

H.H: Yes, and I'm pleased to say the people who met me at the airport were able to attend the conference when all had been settled!

S.A: Let's leave recent events for a moment and talk about your childhood influences that led to you becoming an author, apart from your upbringing as a Christian, you were and still are a fan of the Victorian English Author and Atheist H.G Wells, whom you quote as uttering praise on the teachings of Jesus Christ, can you remind us what was said by Mr. Wells?

H.H: It was said that: The Doctrine of the Kingdom of Heaven, which was the main teaching of Jesus, is certainly one of the most revolutionary doctrines that ever stirred and changed human thought.

S.A: Which as a Christian you would obviously agree with!

H.H: Of course!

S.A: Can you remember the first H.G.Wells story you read, or rather the one that had the biggest impact on you as a writer?

H.H: It would have to be The Time Machine!

S.A: Can you tell us why?

H.H: It was more to do with the ending, after the story itself had been resolved, he decides to travel 30 million years into the future and sees a dieing earth consisting of what little remains before the sun finally ceases and nothing is left to remain. In Well's future, No hope, No God, No afterlife!

S.A: Because it was written by an Atheist, Though one who respected the teachings of Jesus Christ!

H.H: Most people do!

S.A: And I believe you wrote what could be entitled a Christian Science Fiction Story about tine travel as an alternative to Well's ending!

H.H: It wasn't as good, however it made me feel I had achieved something, I was nine at the time!

Headline from Japanese Newspaper Yumiuri: Published two years ago.

Economic Sanctions By China On North Korean Government, Could Lead To Unforeseen And Disastrous Circumstances We are warned.

By our Political Correspondent Ms Aoi Enatsu,

There are those who consider The North Korean Government to be what is called the last true bastion of real Communism. And With the Russian Economy in a mess amidst further upheavals within The Ukraine, and The Middle East itself becoming more unstable, “Some would say due to further interventions by The United States” there are those that believe they have a right to fear they may somehow be next!

Nobody is suggesting The Americans are going to bomb North Korea,,or to be more precise Nuke them as they did with Hiroshima and Nagasaki, however there are other ways!

Like all Dictatorships North Korea is a closed society, it's people are controlled by its unelected leaders who have complete control of all Press and Media related outlets, including mobile phones; It has issued restrictions on the use of The Internet, And whilst The United States is busy elsewhere they apparently have nothing to fear, or do they? North Korea is suspicious of the West and especially The United States, these can be reasoned thus:

In 1910 Korea was ruled by Japan

In 1948 When Japan surrendered North and South Korea had become two separate Governments both claiming they had a legitimate right to be recognised.

on 25th June 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea thus starting what became known as The Korean War, 27th June President Trueman orders American forces into Korean territory supported by The United Nations and Britain!

On 4th of August to 18th September 1950 The battle of The Puan Perimeter took place, in which The United Nations forces were suffering defeat against advanced North Korean forces and South Korea was suffering heavy defeats, However despite being backed by China financially, North Korean troops suffered immense supply shortages,

23rd September 1950 Despite small break throughs in The Puan Perimeter North Korean troops are unable to withstand any further attacks and are forced to retreat unconditionally.

North Korea believes The United States is putting financial pressure on China to help bankrupt its economy! It has been confirmed that China does not support North Korea having a Nuclear Weapons!

North Korea has been put back on the list of State Sponsored Terrorists by THe United States after being briefly taken off by The Bush Administration in October 2008.

North Korea is now at war with Japan and has sent over various weapons of mass destruction and committed acts of terrorism, especially on going Chemical war and Sarin Gas attacks!

On other pages How much was Japanese Science Fiction influenced by The Atomic Bomb? and are the new breed of Japanese Science Fiction Authors being influenced by the situation with the North Korean Government? An interview with Japanese Science Fiction Writer Hayata Hashimoto, taken from excerpts given in The Science Fiction Magazine Dimensions In Space And Time can be found inside.

Interview reassumes.

S.A: Did you read your stories to anyone?

H.H: Oh yes, My Parents and my Grandparents whether they wanted me to or not, persistence is the sign of a good writer! (smiles).: My Grandparents would tell me about the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki where they were born, they said people did not always help each other because they were frightened for their own safety. My Grandfather compared it in someways to H.G.Wells The Tine Machine!

S.A: Without the devouring of human flesh!

H.H: Yes, thankfully, although there were very disturbing scenes, people were running around with appalling injuries such as their faces and skin burnt by radiation, many had limbs blown off or suffered blindness, something ironically similar in The Time Machine if you think about it!

S.A: And did it cause you to think, most Japanese Authors were influenced by The Atomic Bomb, I don't suppose you were any different!

H.H: No, although being young I was into Creature Features, You know, the Godzilla versus Tokyo kind of films, that all Japanese people knew were a metaphor for the United States bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki!

S.A: Did the action get in the way of the message, so to speak?

H/H: I think when your young, it does, although that isn't always a bad thing! My Granddaughter who is nine watches a cartoon series in which a group of young Japanese Spies, take on every week a villain who lives on an undisclosed island and launches attacks against the people of Japan! Mostly the attacks are in the form of gasses that for some reason turn into monsters, I have always considered this a mixed homage, if you get my view!

S.A: Let's talk briefly about other forms of Japanese Science Fiction spurned out of the dropping of The Atomic Bomb, one film springs to mind “that I know is your favourite” is the film Blood Type Blue by the Japanese Film Director Kiachi Okamoto made in 1978. Can you explain a brief synopsis for your younger readers!

H.H: Well the story is about a group of people who are discriminated against, because having witnessed UFOs their blood turns blue. The film is sat at Christmas and is a metaphor for the prejudice suffered by those affected by the radiation, from the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by The United States!

S.A: Isn't it true your Grandmother suffered discrimination, because she had contacted radiation cancer that fortunately was treated!

H.H: Yes, She was told to get out because people feared them both to be contagious, and she was even refused medical treatment at various stages, My Grandfather told me they were even spat at and had things thrown at them, many people suffered similar discrimination, although a lot of people were kind as well. It is because they were afraid, “As Christ said, Father forgive them for they know not what they do!

Interview will continue at appropriate intervals,

Article from The Washington Post:
North Korea Increases Attacks On Japan With A MIxture Of Military Activity And Continued State Sponsored Terrorism,

By our Foreign Correspondent Charles Answorth,

The terrorist backed state of North Korea has come a long way from the bombing of South Korean Flight 858 by two North Korean Agents on the 29th November 1987. Not satisfied with Cyber attacks and trying to prevent the screening of The Interview, a film funded by The Sony Film Company, it has gone back to a more Sadistic and almost Genocidal form of state sponsored terrorism against its's enemy Japan, including terrorism and Sarin Gas attacks and even suicide bombings;

It is said North Korea changed its policy and watered down its state sponsored terrorism after the KAL Flight bombing because it feared upsetting its paymasters, namely Russia and China, though mostly China, And now that The Soviet Union has collapsed, and China is further restricting aid to North Korea it has come to the conclusion that terrorism is the only way it can survive!

North Korea is situated not far from Japan, 649 Miles separated by the sea of Japan. So far it has launched attacks against various Japanese Cities by sending over short range missiles of the non nuclear variety, It has emphatically denied responsibility, claiming it is the work of dissidents backed by The United States influence on economic sanctions that they claim are causing people to become disloyal to the Peoples Democratic Public Of North Korea. However this has been dismissed by The United States Government's Press Office as a fabrication of the truth! Yes, stated a spokesman, there have been protests in North Korea as economic sanctions continue, however they have been callously dealt with as in the case of the two Christian women and one man who were publicly executed on Koran state television. This was strongly condemned by many, including the Japanese Science Fiction Writer Hayata Hashimoto at a conference in Washington! The conference was to highlight the possible threat of a nuclear attack!

Interview continues:

S.A: There are those who believe the cold war helped prevent any threat of nuclear war, and that now after the collapse we are in a more unstable situation, as a member of the peace movement where do you stand on that debate?

H.H: I think there is a case for it, and also one against! The case for is that the Russians were more stable and would not risk the total annihilation of the Earth for political gain, nor for that matter would the United States! However there are many who are committed, we have seen this with 9/11 and we know therefore that not all people are afraid of the consequences, be they religious or otherwise!

S.A: Does that include the non-religious state of North Korea!

H.H: I believe so, North Korea is an old style Communist State, In someways you could argue its leaders follow its teachings religiously!, I also believe they fear persecution for war crimes, should their people ever rise up!

S.A: Do you think that is what the United States is trying to achieve?

H.H: Yes, and whilst I support them, I do not want North Korea to become another controlled state, but allowed to make its own choices!

S.A: Your Daughter is married to an American Soldier, how does he feel about what you do?
H.H: We get on quite well, sometimes when we watch sport he sides more with me, My Daughter prefers Dramas, My Granddaughter cartoons!

S.A: Let's talk about comparisons in cartoons, I refer to United States Nuclear War survival cartoons made during the Cuban incident under President John F.Kennedy and the ones being shown today by Anime!

More excerpts will continue at appropriate intervals!

There now follows a Government Safety film on how to survive an attack. This has been made in cartoon form!

Words appear white on black:

What is Sarin Gas And how Should We React?

So far there have been twelve Sarin Gas attacks against the people of Japan and it's Government, here is Hiroto of the Anime cartoon children's T.V.Series. Space, Battle For The Earth to explain!

Scene shows typical looking young Japanese boy in cartoon form, dressed in post nuclear type space outfit, resembling some kind of Japan where Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not stopped at by The United States during the second world war, However in this one it is clear that the enemy is North Korea! Boy speaks to camera in obvious Japanese(Sic):

“Greetings, I am Hiroto, and this is my Sister Rin! Together we battle to save the Earth from invasions from beyond the galaxy!”

Girl speaks:

“But sometimes, the threat comes from within!”

“Yes, that is true, Sarin Gas, is the biggest threat to our safety, however the ways to deal with it are similar to some of the threats we have faced from beyond the galaxy.”

“So, we are now going to show you how to protect yourself from a Sarin Gas attack!”

Scene shows cartoon gas canister, words come up in Japanese as Rin narrates:

Sarin gas is odourless and colourless, that means it has no smell and no taste, it also cannot be seen! Sarin gas attacks are sometimes not recognised because of this, however mild symptoms include: Sweating, and small pinpoint pupils, headache and excessive urinating and nasal mucus, as well as diarrhea, plus abdominal pains and extreme high or low heart rate and blood pressure! larger dosages can lead to respiratory failure, Paralysis and death! If you believe you have been affected by Sarin gas here are some steps you can take!

Scene cuts to cartoon of suit next to cartoon of skirt and blouse, Rin continues to narrate:

1: Remove your clothing as soon as possible. Do not pull over your head, instead cut with any sharp objects to limit contact with the skin! Sarin can remain on clothing for up to thirty minutes, do not let anyone touch these clothes as they too may become contaminated!

2: Wash yourself thoroughly:
3: Alternatively if nearby, seek medical treatment immediately!

4: If Sarin has been swallowed, please refrain from vomiting yourself, or inducing vomiting of stated victim, also make certain victim is given no liquid! Again please seek medical advice immediately!

5: If you suspect a Sarin attack is about to take place, get away from the area as soon as possible and if you can please alert the authorities! Sarin is heavier than air, therefore the threat is greater at low level area., Although if you believe you have the symptoms, even in a high rise area, seek medical advice immediately!

6: Lock all doors and windows to prevent further exposure to the gas, secure all airways if possible and call for medical help immediately!

7: Antidotes to effects caused by Sarin gas include: Atropine and Praidoxime these can be purchased from emergency medical centres in the event of an attack!

8: Sarin is known as a nerve agent,, that means it is designed to kill humans, as well as our alien friends who help us to protect the galaxy from invasions; Atropine is a counter to nerve gas attacks and has to be administered as soon as possible! Within thirty minutes to an hour, although instantly is recommended!

9: Emergency numbers in Japan are 119 for Fire and Ambulance. The Police can be reached on 110. If you are phoning from abroad the area code for Japan is: 01181 then your phone number remembering to not include the 0!. Most Tokyo Operators can speak English! 119 can also be used to report terrorist attacks!

Scene cuts to Hiroto and Rin in a pointed space ship as if for tunneling: Hiroto, states:

“And now we must continue to protect the galaxy, while you do your part at home!” “Goodluck, Space Agents!”

Ship flies off to the sound of cartoon theme tune.

Interview continues:

S.A: You wrote some episodes for the cartoon series: Space, Battle For The Earth! Did you have anything to do with the film explaining how to survive a Sarin gas attack?”

H.H: “No, they did not ask me for some reason!”

S.A: “Do you think it is because of your political and religious views?”

H.H: “You'll have to ask them, although I believe they wanted someone qualified on the subject of Sarin gas! It was done with help from The Ministry Of Health in Japan!

S.A: When people look back at those old United States films made during the cold war on how to survive a nuclear attack, they consider them very naive, especially when you consider the devastating effects of a nuclear bomb. Do you think we are being naive and also over confident about dealing with the effects of a Sarin gas attack!”

H.H: I believe we can never be too prepared! However I fear, that as North Korea becomes more economically unstable, the situation is likely to get much worse!

S.A: Hayata Hashimoto, that is the first part of our interview, we will continue the concluding part next time!

H.H: Thank you, I'm looking forward to it!

Interview will continue at appropriate intervals.

Article in China Daily:

North Korea Urges China to Stand With Them Against Westernised Threat Against Democracy!

By Su Li:

North Korea has called on China for more financial assistance as it's economy continues to struggle, and not to side with The United States! The President of North Korea said that to do so could have worldwide devastating results! The President of the United States and The Prime minister of Britain have referred to this as a veiled threat of desperation, and urged China to stand firm in the fight against state sponsored terrorism!”

Hayato Hashimoto had brought this copy of China Daily being curious about the article, and also somewhat apprehensive, As a Science Fiction Writer in many ways he considered himself similar to his favourite author H.G.Wells when it came to guessing the future, although thankfully none of it had come true, which was a good thing, since although he also wrote for a children's cartoon series most of his novels were somewhat Dystopian, even if good did finally triumph over evil! It had been almost a month since the interview and the concluding part was in a few days! He considered this as he drove towards the Atomic Bomb Museum where he sometimes went to look around and even talk with friends he had met there! People who had survived the nuclear attacks administered during the second world war by The United States, as well as those who had survived attacks by North Korea! The two had become somewhat intwined and Japan's fears had somewhat returned!

It was also near his Granddaughter's school. He sometimes took her there to look around, and to go for ice-cream and cake whilst he told her stories, Some true, some fiction, some both, though always with a thought provoking meaning to guide her!

“Something everyone should heed.! He stated, noticing up ahead that there appeared to be people staggering about with what appeared to be vomit coming out of there mouths, some were on the floor and he knew immediately that it was another Sarin gas attack, launched by North Korea in desperation to protect it's economic and political regime! Uncertain as to what to do, and concerned about the safety of his Granddaughter, he turned his car around to get out of harms way of the gas, then pulling over to a curb, he dialed the school on his mobile to inquire about the safety of his Granddaughter! There was no answer, he tried two more times then concluded the school was not going to respond, so having The Headmaster's mobile in case of emergencies he dialed that, and stated: “Hello!

The Headmaster recognised his voice and explained that the children and staff had been evacuated and taken to the nearest hospital! Apparently there had been no time to contact anyone, however the authorities were doing that as soon as they got the chance!:

“Is anyone being allowed to visit the hospital?”

“Well I'm there, they gave me some Atropine, however there are people in radiation suits and no one from the public has been seen!”

“Can you ask them?”

“They're very busy, I don't think they-, hold on!” Sir, excuse me, are any families being allowed to visit””

There was an impatient silence then the headmaster returned and stated:

“He said not yet, in an hour's time perhaps if the hospital says it's safe!”

“And do you know if the authorities have contacted the families yet, because I haven't received any calls;

“I believe they will contact them personally, however they'll probably phone back if they don't get a response!”

“Thank you! I'm going to see my Daughter and her husband now! If anything happens please call my number and theirs as well!”

“Yes, I will, don't worry?”

“Do you know what state she or anyone is in?”

“They are not giving out any information at the moment, however, if they do I'll let you know!”

“Thank you, goodbye!”

Most of the multistory blocks of flats in Nagasaki are white, they are built on slopes and Nagasaki is renowned for its mountains and scenery, some of it being built on the sight of the Atomic Bomb, however after all these years, no signs remain, although there are places to visit such as the Atomic War Museum so that people do not forget. Though now other images had replaced them, images of the war with North Korea, infact there was graffiti on some walls comparing those who died in Sarin gas attacks to those who died in the atomic bomb! This however did not spoil the scenic green grass covered mountains or the more oriental looking roof tops amidst the more westernised looking buildings. He stopped his car, it is usually quite difficult to do so because of the slopes in Nagasaki though obviously not impossible! Getting out of his car he made his way to the block of flats and ran up till he got to the fifth floor, he then pressed the intercom and stated:

Davids, Akeme, It's me, there's been an attack at Li Su's school? Can I come in!

“Dad, wait a minute!” stated his Daughter, before opening the door with her husband next to her, his face showing concerns and instantly recognisable as American, his wife wore a yellow dress and had her black hair done up at the back, her eyes are brown ands her hair is deemed glossy to match her rather attractive oriental appearance.

Her Father embraced her, then shook hands with his son in law whilst half embracing him with a reassuring pat on the back!”

“Has anyone phoned you?” Inquired Hayata Hashimoto.

“No, stated David, not yet!”

Interview reasumes.

Ongoing Pursuits part two: Shota Akimaya concludes the interview with Science Fiction Author and Campaigner for peace Hayata Hashimoto.

Shota Akimaya: Hayata Hashimoto, thank you for agreeing to the concluding part of this interview for Dimensions In Space And Time Magazine. It's been a month since we last met, how is Li Su?”

Hayato Hashimoto: “She's very well thank you, the gas attack was more in the economic area so to speak, I think they were trying to effect us financially because of China siding more and more with the Americans!”

S.A: “So, everyone in the school's alright?”

H.H: “Yes, some are still being kept in, however my Granddaughter was fortunate enough to be allowed home!” After that is we we went out for what she calls nice cake, with ice cream!”

S.A: And what is that?

H.H: Steamed Mango Sponge cake with Anko! The ice cream was vanilla!

S.A: Very traditional. Speaking of tradition, it is coming up to the time of remembering the dropping of The Atomic Bomb, will this have any more significance to you after what has recently occurred?”

H.H: Because of the indirect attack at my Granddaughter's school, there will be a special memorial service at the St. Mary's Cathedral Urikami.

S.A: This was famous for being used as a target for the dropping of the atomic bomb, ironically by an all Christian United States Air crew, how do you feel about this?

H.H: I have forgiven them long ago, just as I have forgiven those in North Korea!”

S.A: Including those who killed your Christian colleagues?”

H.H: “Yes”

S.A: There are those who say the Japanese were, to put it bluntly sadistic and even acted in an Anti-Christian way, that Christ would have disproved of, what is your opinion of that?

H.H: I think they are right, as a Christian I Abore all violence and I especially Abore the misuse of my faith for wrongful personal gain!

S.A: There are those who believe the Americans would not have used the bomb, if the Japanese had not attack them, and that this was really used to show their strength, by testing out their capability as part of The Manhattan Project!

H.H: Well Roosevelt did say our boys will not fight in any foreign wars, although I think if no one fought at all, then we would have the world Christ wants us all to have!

S.A: And as a Science Fiction Author, can I ask you to do what H.G.Wells might have done ,and prophesied what you think might be the outcome to this war?

H.H: I think we have to realise that, condemnation whether you are right or wrong, never solves a problem when dealing with an individual that is being forced into a corner. In this case I refer to economic pressure and food restrictions being forced on North Korea! Don't get me wrong, I am opposed entirely to The North Korean Government and it's politics, it's just that the more we force them into a corner, the more they retaliate, we've not only had to deal with Sarin Gas attacks, but acts of terrorism and even Suicide Bombers! I have spoken with my Daughter's husband and he tells me everyone wants a solution before things get worse!

S.A: And we end up with perhaps Nuclear Weapons being used?
H.H: That is one of my biggest fears, that and the safety of my family and everyone else!

S.A: And people can Email you, or write to you if they have any concerns or want to get in contact for any reasons?

H.H: Yes, And can I also say, that all are welcome to give their support, provided it is in the name of peaceful protest!

S.A: You may; Hayata Hashimoto thank you for agreeing to be interviewed by me for Dimensions In Space And Time, Science Fiction Magazine!

H.H: You're all very welcome, it was most interesting!

Note:

Hayata Hashimoto will be giving a speech on behalf of all victims of wars and acts of terrorism at The Hiroshima Peace Memorial next month, you can contact him or this magazine for further
details!

Perhaps Visitors
Word count: 3405

Memories are like landscapes, they travel from place to place and sometimes they even change without our knowing, of course as we get older some of us become more confused and don’t notice these little things, Dreams are similar, the scientific interpretation of dreams is the mind sorting out problems when we sleep, storing the days events into filing systems, Sometimes a document “As I will refer to it” gets put in the wrong file and so a simple dream about walking down a familiar place “Perhaps from ones childhood” gets mixed up with a visit to the Zoo or whatever and so we get surreal situations, sometimes these disturb us and we refer to them as nightmares!

My Grandfather knows all about dreams, or at least he tries too, I first met him or should I say remember visiting him when I was six, it was 1945 not long after the war had ended and I had been told by my Parents that he was an Actor and not only that but he also wrote stories!
Will he tell me one? I inquired excitedly”
Only if you’re a good girl Amelia! Confirmed my Mother straightening my ribbon which I hated and attempted to remove by scratching my hair whatever chance I got!
Dad was patient as ever or should that be diplomatic, wise would be a better word, he chose to stand by the new car he had bought, a Ford I believe it was, I suppose it would not be considered much these days but to us it was magical,!
I felt the same way about seeing my Grandfather for the first time, he lived in an old country house complete with a long winding lane and trees and grass that seemed to have never been disturbed, I remember how surreal it all seemed even the sight of a rabbit scurrying past and cows lounging in a distant field seemed strange,. “Some children had not seen any farm animals and were afraid of them, but my Parents had good jobs at the time and traveled a lot and sometimes took me with them so I suppose I’d seen more than most, yet to me this was different!

When we drove up to the old secluded house I felt as if I was in a dream, there were neat rows of flowers and having parked our car sideways my Father was the first to get out and give an admiring glance at the door tinged with familiarity!”

Now, you’ll be on your best behavior won’t you? My Mother inquired, once more straightening my yellow dress whilst she remained in the knighted position”

Yes Mum” I replied wearily, I wanted to know what was behind that door I wanted to see inside the house and if it compared to my imagination, most of all I wanted to have my imagination fulfilled by my Grandfather’s stories!

Dad rang a rope that chimed. Two small bells could be seen above the arch shaped door that had a glass arch at the top, separated by four lines of brown wood, the door itself was oaken brown and it was as if someone thought it was a cake and had tried to divide it whilst attempting to keep the biggest piece for themselves, for a moment it reminded me of the stained windows of a church, what with the sun on it there was a kind of spiritual feeling about the place as if inside there were many memories being in someway kept alive!

I will not describe my Grandfather just yet, all I will say is that he was younger than I expected and wore a white cardigan when he opened the door. These memories still stay with me now even when I’m busy they will return to haunt me, “His first embrace or the one I remember most was the moment he had held me close to him and shouted my name as if I had been lost at sea! I suppose in a way that made sense!”

After shaking hands and my Mother kissing him on the side of the face, he insisted on helping my Dad with getting the suitcases out the car, “You’re Grandfather says we can stay for a couple of days” smiled my Mother, He’s even got your room ready!

And chocolates! Muttered my Grandfather taking me by the hand as if an excited child with a new friend. I kept silent as he led me up the stairs with the white banisters. reminding me of a old musical film we once saw at some cinema, “This was not entirely without preference because going up the stairs I noticed there were posters of films, all of them my Grandfather told me he had been in. They all had one thing in common they were all made by the British film company known as Ealing Studio, there were familiar comedies some I had seen, and then as we approached the steps I saw a poster that was disturbing as if out of the darkest corner of my imagination there now lurked a faceless beast with open mouth and a somewhat dreamlike shape, my Grandfather clenched my hand as if to gain attention and stated:

I was in that film Amelia; see the poster just above it, that’s from the film too,”

I looked, this one I tried to convince myself was funny, because I was becoming afraid, it showed a man with his hand over a Dummy’s mouth, my Grandfather stopped with me to look and told me he had met the Actor and even had his picture taken with him, “I can show you if you want” he stated!

Yes Please” I replied, but that was not really what I wanted, “And yet something told me it would be impolite to inquire where Grandmother was because somehow I knew, though I was not certain if and when she had passed away , however I knew in time he would tell me!

The film incase you are wondering is called Dead of Night, it is a portmanteau of Ghost
Stories about a man who visits a old country house a bit like this one, in it he tells of his dreams that appear to be coming true, I had not seen it at the time yet already I was fascinated especially when my parents told him, he shouldn’t keep these sort of posters in the house when I come to visit!

You know what an active imagination she has!” Confirmed my Mother when we were all seated at the table having dinner!

I could not help staring at the empty chair that was situated next to my Grandfather; there was even an empty place that had been set!

Where’s Grandmother?”! I inquired, although I knew it lacked diplomacy, I needed to know because like dreams my memories were becoming distorted!

My Mother gave one of those looks parents give when their child has embarrassed them even if unintentional; however it was my Grandfather who smiling at me over his dinner stated:

She was killed in the blitz! Your Grandmother worked as a member of the 93rd Searchlight Regiment of the Royal Artillery. Their job was to operate searchlights so our boys could see the German bomber Planes and shoot them down with Anti Aircraft Guns, unfortunately the one your Grandmother was manning went off and her and three other women were killed outright by a bomb!

I looked at him somehow I could sense the empathy in his voice and also her presence;

The 93rd Searchlight Regiment was all women! Stated my Grandfather, “did you know that Amelia?”

No Grandfather!” I replied even though I had uncertain memories that contradicted my knowledge of past events, that even now as an adult would come back to me as they did as a child!

The meal of Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding with all the trimmings was eaten as normal and after dessert of summer fruit sponge with custard my Grandfather insisted on showing me his garden, whilst my parents remained indoors!

We can have some extra strawberries!” He whispered when we was outside, “I sometimes take them to market to sell them, you can come with me one day if you like! Your Mother used to when she was young!”

Grandfather, I inquired, “What is Dead of Night about?”

He then proceeded to narrate the plot in meticulous detail, my Grandfather was good at that, now as a adult reading his Ghost Stories I can appreciate more his involvement so to speak, not just with the written word but the empathy of detail, some of it is fact yet as stated when you become very old it can get confusing! There was however one thing that confused him even then, “It is a good film Amelia”, most of the stories are explained away as rational coincidences by Dr Van Staaten the German Psychiatrist and you can choose whom to believe, but no one ever explains the ending, I mean when the hero or poor unfortunate depending on your point of view played by Mervyn Johns is surrounded by all those people and he’s on that Star as if he’s in some kind of circus, “where did they all come from?”.

Maybe they were all ghosts Grandfather!” I stated by way of explanation!

Yes, but whose Ghost?, Ghosts are real Amelia you should always remember that, do you know why I set a place for your Grandmother, because she will always be a part of me”, “Come on I’ll show you some photos ,they’re in our bedroom, I kept it the way your Grandmother insisted!”

Inside the bedroom was a large four poster bed complete with top cover and Jacobean type decorum, the floor was covered in a red and yellow swirled patterned carpet giving a sense of Indian mysticism or British warmth. I remember there was a log fire in the Dining Room because my Mother had told me not to get too close to it. Yet back in their bedroom as he referred to it, there was a oil lamp on a dresser that he told me was to help him see!

We have electricity!” He confirmed, but your Grandmother bought it for some reason and I kept it to remind me of her! Now we made need the main light for this Amelia there’s a switch just above you, good girl! Now if you’d be so kind as to turn it on then I can look in the wardrobe!

I did, the room lit up though only with an illuminating glow that further enticed its descriptive narration, yet the wardrobe with its arch shape resembling that of the door itself was evoking. I studied my Grandfather as he seemed to enter and kneel down then after a few moments he came out proudly holding an old box, that I knew contained all my Grandmother’s memories and more besides. He excitedly called me over, yet in a calm nostalgic sort of way, as we sat on the bed and he began to show me photos that told of their love for one another and the memories he wanted to hold onto!

Look Amelia”! He said, holding one up for me to see, this one was taken at your Christening , you see those two people there at the back, well that’s me and that’s your Grandmother, can you see her?

He had said it as if he had been looking at an image only he could see and needed reassurance!

Yes Grandfather”! I said, and then I added, “Were you married long?”

About forty two years!” He replied, “when the war started your Grandmother was called up you see, I served in the first but I couldn’t serve in the second because I had a stroke and they deemed me unfit, I spent most of the first few months in hospital, your Grandmother wrote to me, would you like to see some of the letters?”
I was about to say yes however he had more or less anticipated this and showed me one anyway!
As he was studying it, he muttered out loud as if to himself:

Where did the people in that house come from?”

That question has stayed with us ever since, over the years I got to know not only my Grandfather but also my Grandmother even though I cannot fully remember her personally and what I can is very vague as if in a dream!

I remember when I was twelve he took me and my Parents to a private screening of the film Dead of Night, I cannot exactly remember what it was for, all I know was that just as my Grandfather had predicted “I was frightened” but it was a pleasant sensation just like when I remember listening to him read me his Ghost Stories. “The spirit world is all around us Amelia” he used to tell me, and with our memories sometimes it is within us. They even let him keep the projector, he had his own private screening room in his house and we would even watch his comedy films, yet there were no films of my Grandmother only photos and the memories he told me and my parents! Though the ones he felt closest to for some reason he told to me in secret!

People are not the only ones that can store up their memories, sometimes places will do the same, an old familiar street will cause us to reminisce of childhood friends, of joyful times and even those of sadness, houses do the same! In a sense I suppose the people in the house were there because of something they had done and could not escape from, or perhaps they were an amalgamation of memories, memories that had gone bad, this was something I intended not to happen! So when I grew up I continued as I did as a child to see my Grandfather as did my Parents, even when I moved away and got a job working for the Publishing Company “ that coincidentally published my Grandfather’s stories“, I made up my mind I would choose to see him as well as visit my Parents.

Of course all are older now and my Grandfather has become frailer, I live on my own having not yet married even though I have friends I hope one day to find the right person.
There have been some dates. Though none to write home about. When I do get married I hope to have a child so I can tell them stories, I cannot write stories so they would have to be my Grandfather’s, “He said he’d like to read them the way he reads to me!”

I can read to you as well Amelia; I enjoy you coming to see me, I don’t get many visitors here, except for people from the Age Centre who turn up to see how I am!”

He now lives in London in a Suburban house, his old one has been pulled down, he had to take his memories with him, all the things he considered part of his reality my parents placed in the back of a hired van, this was a time when industrial process moved everyone on! Memories became the only reminiscence of the spirits of the past; perhaps that’s what the film meant since it was set just after the war. I could see the irony of it all, people in a house talking about familiar things, even if they were dreams, dreams like memories always seem real to some people and memories like ghosts need places to stay as long as they are wanted. And I wanted to show him he still was!

So whenever I had time I would take him out in my car to familiar places, not only those he felt nostalgic about, but those he may have only read about or visited in parts. We sometimes visited the places he went to with my Grandmother, we even went back to the countryside, though that was now all modernized or ruined as he called it!
When he was forced to move he took items related to my Grandmother with him, old photo albums and even clothes and the oil lamp as well as his own personal items. Including the film, Dead of Night as well as other films he had starred in as I have stated. My parents helped him by getting him a flat near us, I was about fifteen at the time, he did not want to leave at first but progress was pulling down everything, destroying memories like some German bomb, no houses were left standing and there were no Ghosts to remind us, because even Ghosts need somewhere! So he lived in a strange disturbing area and being a moderately famous Author his appearances were far and few between but he did have his fan base and he replied to all his letters!

This particular visit was somehow different, it was to him important, he greeted me with eager and childlike anticipation, he clung to me and said, “Amelia you’ve come to see us, your Grandmother’s been asking about you!”
I did not reply, his mind was sometimes prone to wander and yet writers are deemed for their use of Artistic License yet I knew he was different, that he was old and his memories had become more solid! He kissed me on the face and even took my hand as he did when I was a child! “We’re going out aren’t we? He said, are we going to have lunch?”

Yes” I said, “the way we always do and you can have your summer fruit sponge that I’ve made you it’s in the car, we can stop somewhere where there’s plenty of grass!”

Not much here in London, all modernized, we prefer it back where we are!”

I did not ask him how he considered my Grandmother’s presence, as memory, as thoughts or as a real presence that like in the film had always belonged. Yet I did have concerns and so gradually I increased my visits and taking him to once familiar places that had become unrecognizable except in thoughts where they remained timeless. I talked to him of things we did and listened to him tell me of things I never knew, I listened to one of his Ghost Stories and then I said to him:

I’ve worked it out, what the film Dead of Night was trying to say, about the people, the occupants, not those he meets at the start, those at the end, their memories were too strong, they had no where else to go, but Grandmother does and one day we will be with her, then we’ll all be together”. “Ghosts like people need somewhere to exist, things have changed, we’re the only ones who keep things the same!

I kissed his face as he sat next to me and he remained silent in thought whilst we toured the familiar surroundings of places we knew and loved! As time went on he became frailer until I knew he would soon be gone. He came to live with me and we would spend hours just talking, sometimes it seemed he was back in the past and that was when he appeared most content! My Parents came to visit and when he became too ill, instead of him reading to me, I read his Ghost Stories to him and he reminisced of the past!

Then as dreams become real as Ghosts become solid he became more confused, yet he knew we were there with him, even in the hospital. When my Grandfather died I held his hand, I still feel his presence when I touch the things he left me, these were The film Dead of Night this one on his projector, even though I already had on it on video, yet he would have wanted me to, plus a few clothes I took for reasons I need not emphasise, and of course his story book, his photos and the oil lamp. There was also stuff from my Grandmother, I did not want them this way however I know through these inanimate objects just like the house in the film he and my Grandmother lived on!

Tall Dark Stranger

Tall Dark Stranger

At the age of 17 Philippa wanted to know all about men. Now a married woman of 36 she wished they knew all about her. The enveloped manuscript lay on her desk, Philippa opened it with a scalpel and removed the contents, the title read:

A STRANGER FOR LOVING

By Clarissa Du'Pre

Philippa read a piece at random:

Abigail sat waiting, she had been like this for over an hour, believing there was still hope and that her true lover would return.

Philippa checked the wall clock that said 18:09, and placing the manuscript in her satchel, removed her yellowey brown mac from a hook of three, then after leaving her Publisher's Office, secured the door with a key and began to make her way downstairs. She stopped halfway to straighten her stocking at the shoe and smiled at the old man on security:

“Goodnight David!” She said

“Goodnight Mrs. Haversham.” He replied, looking up from his paper, his mug of tea already finished.

“At least somebody notices me!” She thought.

It was still early, so instead of returning to her husband, whom was probably asleep in front of the T.V as usual, Philippa decided to go where she assumed there was company. She had done that a lot in the past, before she became married to Arthur. Then, after a while they became “Domestic” Of course she got her share of literary invites, however since she was not in the major league “And Arthur preferring to stay home” they were not what she had hoped for or even expected.

Philippa got in her car after placing her satchel between the gap separating the driver's seat from the passenger's, and having put on her seat-belt checked the rear-view mirror for oncoming traffic before leaving the building car-park that was open spaced. She did however see what clearly looked like the reflected face of a man in his 40's, the kind of face that was well known, as if it had always been there.

“Philippa.”

She turned quickly, there was no one there, not a man in sight.

The nearest bar in this section of London wasn't far from where she worked, It was one of those new fangled Wine Bars Philippa had been demanding her husband take her to, and each time she did her demands were rejected! It looked inviting with its warm orange light covering the window as if it were a nightly store. Philippa entered, not caring whom she talked with so long as it was someone.

There didn't seem to be anyone in the bar except for the young man in his late twenties behind the bar cleaning a wine glass with expert precision. Though Philippa assumed inexperienced in other matters. She smiled none the less and stated:

“Ah, Good evening.”

“Good evening Madam, what can I get you?”

“I'd like a Mombazilac please;

“Certainly, would you like something to eat?” “We have an excellent selection, including some very good desserts to go with the wine!”

“Er, No thanks, I've already eaten-” “Have one yourself though!”

“Thank you Madam.”

It was 8.0 when Philippa left. She had only had two glasses and the Barman seemed to drop her attempts at conversation with stoppers at every given opportunity, in fact no one responded to her the way she they did in those books she was paid to print(sic) The smiles were acknowledging in a way that made her feel cold, and now she knew when she returned home it would be no different.

Philippa lived in a block of flats in Knightsbridge that seemed out of place. Her home on the fifth-floor was respectable within. However outside the building showed the classic distinction she had always strived to leave behind.

She let herself in with her key, stating: “I'm home.” and respecting no reply received none as per usual.

This time however he did stir, he was unshaven and he still wore a vest: “What sort of man wear's a bloody vest?” thought Philippa as she stared at the cup and saucer on the small table he hadn't bothered to take out?”

“I'm sorry, he stated sitting up and rubbing sleep from his eyes, I must have fallen asleep.” “What's the time?”

“About 8:30, Did anyone phone?”

“I'm not certain if they did, I never heard anything.” “What's for dinner?”

“Didn't you do the shopping? What happened to the money I gave you?, “You knew I'd be working!”

“Look, I'm busy, can't you do me anything I'm hungry?”

Philippa left and entered the kitchen. She knew she probably wouldn't see the money again, Arthur had Poker nights with his mates whom Philippa considered just as inadequate as her husband. Philippa opened the freezer and saw it was almost empty, she peered closely and muttered,
“It'll have to do!”

When she returned he was still slumped in front of the television. Philippa stood holding a small plate that contained two sandwiches. He took them then lifted up a piece as if a schoolboy looking under a paving stone for insects.

“What's this?” He Inquired.

“Cheese and celery/” She said with pride.

“You expect me to eat this?”

“Well I did make it.”

He hit her. Philippa had had this thing before, and she knew she had to stand there and take it wishing she could escape into one of those Romantic Novels she published.

Those type got kissed by Moonlight, Philippa seemed to get hit most nights. Her face tearful though still in silence, Philippa made her way into the bedroom, and removing the bag from her shoulder placed it on the bed and went over to the full length mirror that was part of the wardrobe.

“Men.” She muttered, “They're all the same! “Well the ones I seem to know.”

“Am I the same?” said a voice.

“No, you're different!” She clarified, turning to address the person in question. There standing by the window hidden except by Moonlight, was a man in a dark tweed suit with a crisp white-shirt and a maroon tie. He had short black hair and a craggy face, Philippa put him at late thirties or early forties, he looked married.

Philippa smiled and the figure came into distance allowing her to draw his hand to her face.

“I love you/” She confirmed.

The Tall Dark Stranger smiled, enthusiastically understanding her every desire.

“Here!” She said in defiance, moving his hand from her face to the top button of her blouse-”

“Later.” “We cannot rush these things/” “It must be at the right time!”

“Yes.!” Replied Philippa, “The right time.”

“I have to leave.” said The Tall Dark Stranger.

“You will return won't you?” “I mean you will see me again?”

“Of course my love!”

Philippa watched as The Tall Dark Stranger turned into wispy pink talcum powder and floated out the open bedroom window. Then she closed it and went over to her satchel and removed the manuscript, read yet again at random:

Abigail knew how much she loved Dr.Barkworth and hoped he felt the same way. Dr.Barkworth was a refined Gentleman and in charge of the hospital known as St.Medics. He had his own house and car and was considered extremely dashing amongst the ladies.

“Hope he turns out a sod.” damned Philippa, laying the manuscript on the bed as the phone rang in the hallway, she went and picked it up and inquired who it was?

“Philippa it's Miriam, did you receive the manuscript, what do you think of it?” “I think it's very promising.”

Miriam was Clarissa Du'Pre's Agent, she had gotten to know Philippa quite accurately, though not Arthur, “None of them had so it seemed.”

“Yes, it looks very interesting.”

“What do you think of the plot?” Urged Miriam, “You don't think it's too cliched?”

“I cannot comment it's too early.” “Where are you?”

“I've just got off the plane at Gatwick!” “Nigel's decorating, he promised he'd have the bedroom ready for when I return, so I'll have to see you later in the week!” “If you need anything give me a call, you have my number don't you?”

“Yes of course!”

“Anyway I must go!” “Love you!”

“No you don't!” Muttered Philippa, after Miriam had clicked off.

The Tall Dark Stranger floated as pink talcum powder through the bedroom window, and becoming form glanced in commiseration at the slumped figure of the man seated in the chair in the middle of the half decorated bedroom. Then with contempt at how his poor wife had been misled, he gently picked up the trowel that lay on the floor, and with Satanic force plunged it deep into the man's skull, cracking through bone and drawing out gushes of blood as he released his grip. The body slumped dead onto the floor.

The Tall Dark Stranger turned into yellow snow-flake Apple blossom and floated into the dining room, And seeing how splendid it was with its oaken table and chairs compared to the unfinished bedroom, studied the unlit candelabra knowing when Philippa's time came he would never reject her, because women were not to be discarded. The Tall Dark Stranger turned back into Apple blossom and this time floated through the letter box, gently wafting past Miriam as she entered the house with a key, soon to discover her husband dead! Blood from his skull mingled with fluid gushing out of his open mouth, the trowel still firmly embedded in his skull.

Miriam stared in contempt at the unfinished wallpaper, before deciding to phone the Police.

Abigail gazed fondly into the face of Dr.Barkworth, She felt her heart beating rapidly as he drew closer to her. His arms circled round her waist, their lips touched gently at first and then as the passion grew more forceful-”

Philippa are you alright?”

Philippa replaced the manuscript and turned to see her husband arched in the bedroom entrance, as if it somehow represented their wedding day when things had looked so promising.

“I was reading.” She said emotionless.

“Are you going to the shops?, I've phoned some of my friends, they're coming over this evening.” “I was wondering if you could pick up some cans of beer?”

“Alright!”

He studied her in silent concern, however this was not enough! And so he left knowing he had done wrong yet not wanting to change deep down.

The Tall Dark Stranger wafted through Philippa's bedroom window as Apple blossom and turned into form. She stared at his craggy yet attractive face, his eyes holding her transfixed as he drew her closer and inquired:

“What's wrong?” “You can tell me” “That's why I came.”

“He expects me to pick up some cans of beer, his friends are coming over tonight for another of their late night Poker sessions, it'll be my money he spends.” “He knows I'm busy, why can't he go his bloody self?”

“Does he understand your predicament?”

“I suppose deep down.”

“Too deep to rekindle the past?”

“If I try to explain how I feel he ignores me, or worse he becomes hostile!” “He was never like that before we married! I want things different, everything is so routine, it's like nothing actually changes all we do is rearrange things;

“Would you like to rearrange things permanently?” Empathised The Tall Dark Stranger, as she drew closer to him and he held her whilst she rested her tearful face upon his shoulder.

“Yes.” “Stay with me!”

“Of course.” said The Tall Dark Stranger.

The phone rang later that evening, and whilst The Tall Dark Stranger waited in the bedroom and Arthur slept in the dining room, Philippa went to answer it.

“Philippa it's Miriam.”

Her voice was almost hysterical, Philippa knew it was best to let Mirian explain.

“I-I've phoned the Police, Nigel's dead!” “Somebody must have broken in and killed him, although there's no sign of forced entry!”

“Dead?” Stated Philippa in disbelief, “Are you on your own?”

“No/” “There's a young Policeman in the bedroom waiting for forensics!” :Nice looking Gentleman, very restricted though!”

“How was he killed?” Inquired Philippa, trying not to sound gory.

“A trowel was plunged through his head! They say whoever did it must have been very strong to use such force! We were supposed to go to Patrick's dinner party over the weekend, he's expecting you and Arthur to come.”

Patrick was a Book Reviewer for a well known paper and his column was a reliable guide to what were the best books to read. His reviews could make or break an Author it was claimed, and Philippa knew Miriam needed Clarissa Du'Pre's reviews to improve since they had not been too favourable concerning her last novel.

“We'll try. If Arthur's too tired, I'll come on my own.” She said, as if in defiance,”If ever you want to come over Miriam, I mean if ever your lonely-”

“I will Philippa, I believe forensics are here, I'll phone you back.” “Thank you.”

Philippa replaced the phone, noticing without having to look that The Tall Dark Stranger was beside her to give his support because she needed someone to understand.

“Did you kill him?” Inquired Philippa.

Yes”!”

“Why?” She Protested.

“Because I was asked to, not in so many words you understand, however you know who I am, and so do all women!” “So does Miriam; “You see my darling her life is similar to yours in so many ways, that's why I'm here for you!”

“Why don't men understand?” Inquired Philippa.

“Some men do!” “They to expierience what you are going through and seek help from us!”

“What do you mean us?”

“Those men whom, like women are rejected, have someone to turn to, a woman called The NightShadow.” “You see Philippa even men have their own Romantic Avenger;

That evening Philippa waited on Arthur and his four male friends, whilst they played Poker and wasted her money that she had worked so hard for! Arthur seemed to enjoy ordering her about, and the fact his friends found her attractive gave him a sense of oneupmanship, Philippa knew she was so much more.

Philippa began to wash the glasses, hating the smoke drifting from the dining room and knowing Arthur could never really stop! She hated being a housewife rather than a woman, or rather one without the other! And now Arthur was calling her to bring in more food relative to the evening.

The Tall Dark Stranger placed his hands on her shoulders as she dried a final plate, and seeing her tears whispered, “I know you Philippa, I always know what women desire.”

Philippa turned her, her face reddened, her musty blonde hair smelling of cheap moisture that men once found desirable.

“I want you to kill my husband!” :I want to be rid of him!” “I want to be treated how I used to be!”

“Of course I will my darling, but first we need a plan!” “If I kill him in a way that causes suspicion the Police may come and arrest you, that is why we must work together on this.”

“An accident.” Agreed Philippa, trying to think of a plan.

“What does he usually do?” Inquired The Tall Dark Stranger.

“Sod all most of the time, like all bloody men when they put the ring on!” “However he sometimes goes down the pub.”

“Can he drive?”

“Yes!” “But if he does he only has a couple of pints because he's been cautioned in the past! And he's well known to the Police!”

“Don't worry I'll take care of things, You persuade him to take the car.” “Do you think you can do that for us darling?”

He kissed her lips lovingly and she allowed an embrace to happen.

“Yes, I can manage that for both of us.”

“Then I will have to confirm our plans with the correct source!”

Being a Gentleman The Tall Dark Stranger stayed till Arthur's friends had gone, then asking politely to be excused he turned into an Apricot breeze found only in spring time and floated as Orange fragrance out the door! Leaving Philippa to contemplate what would happen.

That evening whilst Arthur slept ridden with the stench of beer and cigarettes, she dreamed she was at a Grand Opening and wore a beautiful Period Gown. She was dancing with The Tall Dark Stranger whom wore a Dinner Suit and Bow Tie. They were admired by everyone. In the morning however reality set in, and yet this time there was something different. Arthur wanted to talk. Whether it was the effect of the drink or genuine empathy he seemed sorry about the way he had treated her. He told her he loved her! And he didn't like the way she had to keep proving herself to people ike Miriam and especially Patrick. He wanted her to realise who she really was.

Philippa embraced him, knowing he didn't really understand, even though like most men he believed he did. She told him she would prepare breakfast and that she would be very busy today.

“I won't be back till late.” She stated, “If you want to go out, you can take the car if you want, I'll take a Taxi.”

“I may need some money!” He said, his voice somewhat nervous.

“Of course.” She smiled.

He clenched her hand as she began to leave the bedroom, letting it slip as she smiled in commiseration at how they could have been. Then he closed his eyes in thought,

Before preparing breakfast Philippa went to the dining room where her satchel lay on the settee along with the manuscript she had almost finished. She took it out and having read correctly continued;

Abigail knew she had to stand beside Dr.Barkworth

“I did not mean for The Chairman's Son to die during surgery, I feel I will never wave another scalpel!” “But at least now I can take his place on the board, and soon you and I will be together!”

Philippa smiled, “Was Dr.Barkworth subconsciously responsible for murder?” “Even though The Chairman's Son had only gone in for a kidney operation?” “Does anyone really understand what true love is?”

The Tall Dark Stranger smiled at the way he had expertly fixed the brakes of Arthur's car, told to him by a murderous Gentleman whom The NightShadow had killed for so she could be with in Paris.

The Tall Dark Stranger watched as Arthur began to drive along having left the pub. And then the car swerved out of it's path and crashed into a wall! Being the sort that did not wear a seat-belt Arthur crashed through the windscreen and was instantly killed. His body lay half in and half out, his chest embedded with glass, turning his shirt from white to crimson, The Tall Dark Stranger smiled and floated as wispy Autumn breeze smelling of Apple blossom.

Philippa heard the phone ring whilst she waited for her lover to return. This time it was Patrick asking if she and Arthur could make it this Saturday at 5.0? Dinner would be at 8.0 but Patrick always had things to discuss.
Philippa knew in truth she'd be coming alone. However she agreed and said she and Arthur were both looking forward to it.

“That's good.” “It's terrible what happened isn't it?”

“You mean about Miriam's husband Nigel.” Emphasised Philippa.

“Yes!” “Have the Police questioned you yet?” “Because they've been to see me and I heard they questioned some other people;

“No, they haven't!” said Philippa.

There was a silence and for some reason Philippa knew what she had to ask:

“Patrick.” “Have you ever heard of The Tall Dark Stranger?”

“You mean the character in Romantic Fiction who understands all women and comes to them in their hour of need?, He's fiction Philippa he doesn't exist!”

“Thank you!” said Philippa, then stated “Goodbye.” and replaced the phone.

Was Patrick correct? Was there inn truth no one whom really cared? Yet like those characters in those books, she believed in hope and soon that hope appeared,

“Philippa.” Began The Tall Dark Stranger, “I've done what we both wanted.”

“You mean, “She turned for confirmation” “Arthur, you've killed him?!

“Yes, my darling.” “I have freed you from domestic burdens!” Stated The Tall Dark Stranger, Standing there holding a vintage bottle of Champagne and a Knightsbridge shopping bag ladled with food that he would prepare this evening, though first they had to prepare another concoction!

“The Police will no doubt contact you soon Philippa!” “When they do it will be routine at first, since they will not want to be deemed too intrusive!” However suspicion may occur and so listen carefully to what I have to say.”

Being a Bon Viveur as well as a renowned Gentleman, The Tall Dark Stranger set the table amidst candlelight and soft music and prepared:

OYSTERS IN CHAMPAGNE JELLY (from the vintage he had brought, they would drink the rest with the meal)

LANGOUSTINE TAILS DIPPED IN HOLLANDAISE.

INDIVIDUAL DARK CHOCOLATE SOUFFLES WITH RASPBERRY SORBET(S) CENTRES,

He even prepared a set of appropriate Petit Fours to round the evening off!

Philippa and The Tall Dark Stranger made love. And although she had what she desired, she missed the familiarity of the past, but now she knew they both had to look to the future.

Philippa slept in the arms of The Tall Dark Stranger, yet when she was awakened by a knock at the door at 4:10 A.M. she got out of bed alone. She feared nothing, her lover had left, not so she could face the consequences, but so he would not lead her into suspicion. When Philippa opened the door she was faced with the presence of a Policeman in uniform whom introduced himself as Detective Sergeant Wentley. He Stated that her husband had been killed in a car accident, “Diplomatically, then apologised but insisted he had to come in and speak with her, since forensics were concerned about the car-” Philippa, unafraid of having discovered true love let him in, And even offered him a cup of tea, which he agreed too. In the dining room, Philippa in a green nightdress of acceptable chaste, explained as she sipped her tea that her husband sometimes took the car and did not always inform her of his decision.

“Forensics believe the brakes were tampered with Mrs.Haversham, can you explain how this could have happened?”

“I took the Taxi because the car had indeed been playing up, and told my husband I would contact the garage on my return!” “He kept saying I wouldn't have time because I'm very busy!” “He must have taken it himself believing there wasn't much wrong with it!”

D.S.Wentley looked in plausibility.

“Your husband crashed leaving the pub; “Does your husband usually visit the pub?” “I ask because it does take him slightly out of the area!”

“He could have reached the garage; “It'd only take him slightly more time!” Stated Philippa, as if putting her defence,

“Yes, that is a possibility.” “I mean it wouldn't really take him all that long.” “Do you know if your husband phoned the garage to make an appointment?”

“No, he never tells me anything!” She said, sounding rejected, even if unintentionally.

“I believe you're friends with a woman named Miriam Grenville?”

“Yes!” “She's an Agent.” “Her husband was recently murdered!”

D.S.Wentley looked at her as if she'd failed to spot an obvious clue in some Victorian murder mystery, “It's possible your husband was murdered by the same man who killed Mr. Grenville; “Do you happen to know anyone whom might have a grudge?” “Some Author who can't take rejection?” “A business rival of some sort?” “A former employee perhaps?”

“No!” “I'm sorry I can't be of anymore help!”

The rest of the discussion was amicable, in fact D.S.Wentley seemed very understanding and Philippa wondered if she had judged things more than she should have?!?

He left at 9.0 giving her a number to phone, and the reference number in case she was put through to the desk Sergeant.
She thanked him and smiled.

D.S.Wentley smiled back official, though that did not matter.

Philippa spent the rest of the day on the phone to Miriam and the two of them now seemed more closer.

Philippa decided that evening to finish the rest of Clarissa Du'Pre's Novel, She read:

Abigail and Dr.Barkworth now had each other as they had always desired. Yet the completeness had removed not freedom but a boundary they were both beginning to miss. This new world of Dark Romance was uncertain and they were wondering if they had chosen the incorrect path. Though they were together.

No one phoned Philippa after that. Even Patrick whom assumed she knew when the dinner party was had only phoned once. When Philippa arrived by Taxi to Patrick's house in London, he welcomed her with an over affectionate greeting that Philippa knew was automatic rather than because he desired her!

“Philippa, Come in and meet our Vault Of Horror, we're quite friendly when you get to know us!”

Philippa allowed Patrick to lead her by the hand, “She already knew Miriam, there were two men and one woman in a green crossover dress whom was one of those over elegant Romantic Novelists. The two men were in the publishing business, working overseas so to speak.

The first course of Watercress and Lime Soup with Mussels was light and refreshing as was the conversation, “Until they tried to be empathic by showing sympathy over Arthur” Philippa wanted to scream, “You don't know what he was like.” “This is real life not some bloody Romantic Novel written for people who can't face the fact we're all flawed; Instead she smiled and thanked them for their genuine concern.

“Did the Police tell you whom they believed was involved?” Inquired Miriam, “Only D.S.Wentley told me he spoke with you.” “Apparently they seem to think both our husband's murders are connected!”

“No.” “I suppose they don't want us to warn anyone unintentionally!” Stated Philippa, sipping Merlot whilst Patrick checked the Roast Leg of Lamb with Garlic and Rosemary, Lyonaisse Potatoes. At 10:30 after a double helping of homemade Chocolate Mint Ice Cream, Patrick insisted on phoning a Taxi for Philippa and told her to phone if she wanted anything.

In the Taxi Philippa watched people hand in hand and studied the lights of the West End, as if this was the World she would soon enter with her lover.

She asked to be dropped off a few yards from her home and paid the driver tip included He thanked her and drove off.

Philippa brought a Newspaper from an all night corner Shop, wondering if there was anything in it about Arthur or even Miriam's husband? There wasn't, however the headline on the cover did state:

WOMAN FOUND DROWNED IN BATH IN LIVERPOOL, WOMAN DRESSED IN PINK CHIFFON TROUSERS AND LACE BLOUSE BEING HUNTED BY THE POLICE.

“Men have their own Avenger.” thought Philippa, “The NightShadow.”

Philippa arrived home and let herself in with a key, she went into the bedroom, removed her yellowey brown mac and placed it on the chair. A mist of apple blossom floated gently through her bedroom window and there stood The Tall Dark Stranger wearing a Dinner suit and Bow-Tie, holding a Gentleman's handkerchief stained with blood.

“Have you killed someone?” Inquired Phillippa.

“Yes my darling.” “A man in Threadneedle Street, he rejected his poor wife by spending too much time at the office as a Chartered Accountant!” “But do not worry my love soon we will be together-”

“What you mean soon?” Screamed Philippa, “What about me don't I count?”

“Of course you count my darling as do all lonely people whom believe in Romantic hope!” “That's why I must go to whoever needs me!”

“Men!” Muttered Philippa, “You're all the same, I suppose women'll call you Dr.Barkworth from now on;

The Tall Dark Stranger turned into wispy pink talcum powder and floated out the window stating:

“I love you Philippa.

Philippa stood there with only her memories, wondering if what she had done was really worth it? And hoping that one day she would find true romance should her lover return?!?
